Nearly incompatible series of paintings act as components of one unified, ongoing body of work titled Attempt. The numbered series is characterized by both overt formal connections between successive works and abrupt discontinuities or reversals. Formal ideas mutate, break off, and then reappear ten or twenty works down the line. The step-by-step-ness of Attempts mainly serves to generate a sense of the everyday with all of its repetition, struggle, and pathos. As an overall project, Attempts weave a narrative of impermanence and the fragility of life with modes of creating coming and going, echoing the ebb and flow of daily existence and experiences.
