attempt 159

“In the self-reflexivity of its rules (and in this emphasis on the assisted readymade), Attempts channels the neo-avant-garde of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Peña seems most at home somewhere between Jasper Johns’s dictum of “Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it,” and Richard Serra’s Verb List. But rather than undertaking any systematic critique of the work of art, the step-by-step-ness of Attempts mainly serves to generate a sense of the everyday—with all of its repetition, struggle, and pathos.”
-Roger White, excerpt from catalog essay for “the wants and needs of a fearful life”
